Since 2011, Worcester & Stratford Hearing Centres have been in support of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. When we used to run our Hearing Shows in Worcester and Stratford-Upon-Avon, they were always present creating awareness by doing presentations about what Hearing Dogs for Deaf People do and how the dogs are trained.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People train dogs to alert deaf people to important and life-saving sounds they would otherwise miss –  sounds that many people take for granted like the doorbell, alarm clock and even danger signals like the fire alarm. Being aware of these – thanks to a hearing dog – makes a real difference to deaf people’s lives, and can even save them.

Deafness can be very isolating. A hearing dog can give a deaf person a newfound sense of independence and confidence now they have a loyal companion and a true friend by their side.

His Volunteer Puppy Trainer Clare explains: “Cooper loves playing with another hearing dog in training whom we’re looking after. They play together, run around lots, and then sleep cuddled up to each other. It’s so cute.”

Indeed, Cooper has a lovely life in which everything is a delight.

Back to Clare: “He loves running off with our garden shoes – in fact, any of our shoes, especially those with laces, and especially those we’re about to wear, oddly enough.
“Outdoors, he adores watching the birds on the feeders, plus the squirrels, which fascinate him. Indoors, he even sleeps cheerfully, with little puppy snuffles as he dreams about, presumably, shoes, laces, birds and squirrels.”

Cooper’s favourite places are the garden, and his bed in the kitchen. So, between active times frolicking in the garden, and sleepy times all curled up in his fleecy bed, what else does Cooper like?
“Food,” says Clare. “Always food. He’s a Labrador after all!”

Ah yes, Labradors and their food. Cooper’s happiness is matched only by his love of food. This makes him a happy chappy with a bit of puppy fat. But don’t worry, he’ll grow into his skin. One day he’ll be magnificent, glossy and sleek, and will change a deaf person’s life, and spread his happiness far and wide.

Who calls Teddy a cheeky little monkey? Peter and Hazel, his Volunteer Puppy Trainers, that’s who!

When he went to live with them, he was all sweetness and light. “His first night was very good,” Peter tells us. “He cuddled his dog-shaped hot water bottle and went fast asleep, not waking up until six o’clock the next morning, which was quite amazing. Not a squeak all night.”

Since then, he’s made himself very much at home. “He loves visitors of all shapes and sizes,” says Hazel. “He has learned that ‘doorbell = visitor = fun.’” Who’d have thought a small puppy could do mental arithmetic like that?

And as he’s grown in confidence, he’s become a bit cheeky, a bit mischievous… but he’s so cute he can get away with it.

Peter explains: “Around tea-time, he’ll have a sudden spurt of energy. He races from one room to the next and back again, jumping around on our rugs. He repeats this several times before stopping, looking at us with the cutest of smiles, and then setting off again for more laps!”

So the rugs are all a bit of a mess now, but it’s alright, because Teddy’s cute!

He’s soft and cuddly, just like a Teddy bear – provided you can catch him as he does his circuits of Peter and Hazel’s house.

Lily is an absolutely gorgeous little Cocker Spaniel!

Her markings are so distinctive, with that classic blue roan ‘smoky’ look. She hasn’t quite got the hang of her ears yet, and tends to fall over them. Same with her gangly puppy legs. It’s so cute!

She’s also very cute indeed when she snuggles on your shoulder and falls asleep, emitting hot little puppy snuffles right into your ear.

Everything about Lily is soft, gentle and good-natured. She’ll go for a little explore in a new place and then, happy that everything is as it should be, will plonk herself down and have a snooze. She’ll play with her toys quietly to herself. She’ll meet new potential friends – dogs, cats, socks – in the same, peaceable way.

Did we say everything? Not quite! You see, she’s also a puppy with a sense of fun. She occasionally enjoys a bit of tug-o-war with her toys too, and she’s fascinated by her Volunteer Puppy Trainer’s own pet dog. She would like to play tug-o-war with his tail too! But don’t worry, it’s just a big, furry, waggy thing that fascinates her.

Back to the soft-hearted, sweet-tempered Lily. When you’re around her, there’s a sense of calm and peace. One day, a deaf person who may be feeling anxious or scared will really benefit from this little girl’s tender, patient love.

March 3rd is World Hearing Day


With over a billion young people at risk of avoidable hearing loss due to recreational sounds, the focus of the World Hearing Day 2022 is on hearing loss prevention through safe listening.


The theme ‘To hear for life, listen with care’ signifies that to have good hearing across the life course, it is important to take care of one’s ears and listen safely.

It is possible to have good hearing across the life coursethrough ear and hearing care.

Many common causes of hearing loss can be prevented,including that which is caused by exposure to loud sounds.

Practicing safe listening can mitigate the risk of hearing loss associatedwith recreational sound exposure .




Loud sounds damage ears!

Listening to loud sounds damages sensory cells in your ears. This can lead to noise-induced hearing loss or ringing in the ear (tinnitus).


You could be at risk of noise-induced hearing loss if you regularly:

  • work in a noisy place,
  • listen to audio over head/earphones,
  • visit places with amplified music e.g., nightclubs, concerts, or fitness classes.






Noise-induced hearing loss is permanent

Hearing loss due to noise cannot be reversed.

People with hearing loss can benefit from hearing devices and rehabilitation services.






But, noise-induced hearing loss can be prevented!

Safe listening practices can prevent hearing loss. The louder you listen, the shorter the time for listening safely.

By turning the volume down or protecting your ears, you can listen for longer without harming your hearing.





Adopt these simple safe listening behaviors:


  • Keep the volume down

Set your device’s volume level to no more than 60% of maximum.

Use well-fitted, and noise cancelling headphones.


  • Protect your ears from loud sounds

Wear earplugs in noisy places.

Move away from sources of sound, such as loudspeakers.


  • Limit time spent engaged in noisy activities

In a noisy place, take regular breaks in a quiet area.

Limit daily use of personal audio devices.


  • Monitor listening levels

Use apps to monitor your sound exposure.

Choose devices with built-in safe listening features.

7 tips to hear better this Christmas

Christmas is the most magical time of the year, but also the most challenging one for people with hearing loss.

During this special season, after a very difficult couple of years; we are all looking forward to being with the ones we love, the ones we haven’t seen all year… do not let your hearing stop you from enjoying your family and friends this Christmas.

Celebrations often happen in large groups, in busy restaurants, with a lot of people talking over one another and music playing, all at the same time. Conversation can be challenging for most people, but if you’ve got a hearing loss, these noisy gatherings can be very frustrating, daunting, unenjoyable and something to avoid.

For people with hearing loss, it’s often at these social occasions where their unaddressed hearing loss can cause them to feel particularly isolated.

Even when surrounded by family and friends their hearing struggles can cause them to feel left out of the conversation and fun.


Here are 7 tips on how to hear better this Christmas:


1.   Remind your family and friends that you have a hearing difficulty. Being open about it will remind them to slow down, speak up and be more attentive to your needs.
Extra tip: Ask them to face you directly when speaking in noisy environments for extra support.

2.   If you are attending a dinner, pick a strategic spot at the table. Sit in a position where you can see most people’s faces. Seating in the middle of one side of the table rather than at the very end of a long table can be more beneficial to engage in one to one conversations and also follow what is going on around you.
Extra tip: Pick a seat where there’s a wall behind you. This helps cut down on distracting noises around you.

3.   Don’t feel bad about asking people to repeat themselves. It is much better to get the message right than try to pretend you have. This can lead to awkward moments!

4.   We all love a Christmas Carol, but trying to follow a conversation with loud music on can be hard if you have a hearing loss. Remember it is ok to turn the music down a little if it is getting in the way of enjoying the conversation with your loved ones.

5.   Mingle! Having a conversation with two people at a time is much easier than trying to engage in a large group conversation. Move from one small group to another, another benefit to this is having more meaningful interactions.
Extra tip: You can always go around offering canapés or drinks if you feel awkward while mingling.

6.   If you suspect you have a hearing loss but haven’t had a hearing assessment before, book an appointment with one of our audiologists a few weeks before Christmas, don’t leave it until next Christmas to do something about it.

The link between COVID-19 and hearing loss

Scientists estimate nearly 15% of people with the virus suffered tinnitus and nearly 8% suffered hearing loss.


Hearing loss and other auditory problems may be strongly linked to coronavirus, new research suggests.

Scientists estimate 7.6% of people infected with COVID-19 experience hearing loss, while 14.8% suffer tinnitus. They also found the prevalence of vertigo was 7.2%.


The researchers, Professor Kevin Munro and PhD researcher Ibrahim Almufarrij from The University of Manchester and Manchester Biomedical Research Centre, compiled data from 24 studies that identified an association between coronavirus and auditory and vestibular problems.

“If it is correct that something between 7% and 15% are having these symptoms, that’s something we should take very seriously,” Professor Kevin Munro, said director of the Manchester Centre for Audiology and Deafness. ”There are big implications for clinical services if this means there could be a big increase in the number of people coming forward.”

Hearing problems can be caused by other viruses – including measles, mumps and meningitis – which damage sensory cells in the inner ear.

It is not known why COVID-19 can cause these issues and researchers believe a wide variety of people have been affected. “There are some people who say the symptoms are ongoing. There are others who say it seems to have settled down a bit so there are lots of unknowns right now,” Prof Munro said.

The researchers’ data primarily used self-reported questionnaires or medical records to obtain coronavirus-related symptoms, rather than the more scientifically reliable hearing tests.
They are now conducting a more detailed clinical study which they hope will accurately estimate the number and severity of COVID-related hearing disorders in the UK. Professor Munro, is currently leading a year-long UK study to investigate the possible long-term impact of COVID-19 on hearing among people who have been previously treated in hospital for the virus.
His team hope to accurately estimate the number and severity of COVID-19 related hearing disorders in the UK, and discover what parts of the auditory system might be affected. They will also explore the association between these and other factors such as lifestyle, the presence of one or more additional conditions and critical care interventions.


A recent study led by Professor Munro, suggested that more than 13 per cent of patients who were discharged from a hospital reported a change in their hearing.


Ibrahim Almufarrij said: “Though the evidence is of varying quality, more and more studies are being carried out so the evidence base is growing. What we really need are studies that compare COVID-19 cases with controls, such as patients admitted to hospital with other health conditions”.

“Though caution needs to be taken, we hope this study will add to the weight of scientific evidence that there is a strong association between Covid-19 and hearing problems.”Professor Munro added: “Over the last few months I have received numerous emails from people who reported a change in their hearing, or tinnitus after having COVID-19.

“While this is alarming, caution is required as it is unclear if changes to hearing are directly attributed to COVID-19 or to other factors, such as treatments to deliver urgent care.”

Also, we will be contacting all of our customers who have missed appointments during the lockdown to reschedule.

We are following strict infection control procedures and social distancing methods as indicated by the NHS, BSHAA and BAA guidelines; for appointments, sanitisation and sterilisation.


Guidelines for attending appointments

By accepting your appointment you have agreed to the best of your knowledge:

•  You or anyone in your household does not have COVID-19.
•  You or anyone in your household has had contact with anyone who has tested positive or shown symptoms of COVID-19.
•  You do not have a new, continuous cough.
•  You do not have a high temperature (37.8 oC or over).
•  No one in your household has a new, continuous cough or a high temperature.

By providing this information at the time of our call, we have agreed to provide you with an appointment. If we suspect that this information is not a true reflection of your condition, we reserve the right to refuse the appointment for your safety and ours.

What we ask you to do:

•  Arrive at the allotted and agreed time not early & certainly not late. If early, wait outside until you are called into the clinic.
•  If you depend on a supportive contact for transport to the practice we ask them to wait outside for you to finish. Unless required for assistance due to disability.
•  The temperature of the customer will be taken on arrival, when filling out COVID-19 declaration.
•  Once on the premises please refrain from touching anything unnecessarily.
•  You will be given hand sanitiser to thoroughly clean your hands. We ask you to bring a face mask, if you do not have one we will provide one but there will be a £1 charge.
•  If for some reason, you need to cough, or sneeze, warn the audiologist immediately or put your mouth into your sleeve if a warning is not possible.
•  Follow the instructions of the audiologist and please indicate if you do not understand anything.
•  Keep light conversation to a minimum during the appointment unless its related to the procedure particularly if you are within 2m of the audiologist
•  When leaving please sanitise your hands again & refrain from touching anything where possible.


We have prepared for re-opening

Both of our practices have undergone a deep clean sanitisation procedure as a precautionary measure.

We have sanitised our carpets and all surfaces, focusing on touch points including equipment, furniture, desks, computers, doors, floors, kitchens and toilets.

We have teamed up with Dynamic Cleaning Services, another local business, for this endeavour.

During periods of social distancing and isolation, having working hearing aids is essential to keep users communicating with family and friends and keeping up to date via the TV and radio.

Even though we haven’t been able to offer face-to-face consultations during this difficult time, we have been supporting our customers, in both Worcester and Stratford, with telephone consultations, hearing aid repairs and providing battery supplies.
