NHS vs Private Hearing Care

Do You Know The Difference?

There are many aspects to consider between NHS and private hearing care and systems and hearing care.

Among the most important ones are:
•   Waiting times
•   Style
•   Technology
•   Continued Care
•   Costs

Digital hearing instruments can make a real difference in the quality of life for people that are struggling with their hearing, but choosing whether to get a hearing aid through the NHS, or privately, is a difficult decision.

You can book an appointment to see a hearing specialist for a private hearing test, which consists of a full evaluation of your hearing and ear health, at both our hearing aid centre in Worcester and our Stratford Hearing Centre. You will be shown the inside of your ear on a video otoscope, a pure tone audiogram will be performed to show the hearing thresholds and then a speech in noise test to establish a level of real world effective hearing.

During this consultation the audiologist will explain the difference between NHS or private hearing care and answer all your questions.

Director of Audiology, Tom Dixon says “We offer bespoke hearing solutions for each person that comes into our practice, no two people are the same. Therefore, no two cases of hearing loss are the same. That is why we don’t provide anything off the shelf. The most important part of a patient’s journey to better hearing isn’t just fitting the hearing systems, it is the continued care and support so they can improve and enjoy their life.”

Are you looking for a hearing test in Pershore, Redditch, Evesham, Kidderminster or even Droitwich?

Worcester and Stratford Hearing Centres are just a short drive away.

Find out which of our two practices is closer to you and book your hearing assessment today.

We Are Here For You

Dear Loyal Customers,

We just wanted to address our customer base after the announcement made by the Prime Minister on Saturday evening. We are officially on the list of essential services, will not be closing down this time and will continue to offer our full range of services. Ear wax removal, hearing tests, hearing aid fittings, hearing aid servicing and repairs will all still be carried out during this time with the COVID-19 safety measures and PPE worn at all times. The government have recognised the need for people to be able to access hearing and vision services and have actually encouraged people to attend their health care and medical appointments. We have the same best practice safety measures and full PPE in place we have had since we reopened in June, which have been responsibly adhered to by all our customers since we reopened.

All appointments are being carried out as planned. If anyone would like to postpone their appointment until 2021 then we would ask that you contact us as soon as possible as we are trying to accommodate customers as best we can into the diary for next year.

Unfortunately due to this recent development and the continued uncertainty around the pandemic we are not going to be able to go through with our intended move to our new practice. So, on a positive note we will be staying in our current location in Worcester city centre. We are going to look at making best use of the current space and reconfiguring things around to create and extra consulting room and give us a little more space upstairs.

This is going to be a very difficult time for many people and businesses, again. We thank you for your continued support and want to reassure you all that we are here if you need us. It is important to remain positive in this challenging time. The Virus will not beat us! Regardless of how the situation evolves we will endeavour to look after our loyal, valued customers.

Stay safe and very best wishes,

Tom & Victoria

Worcester & Stratford Hearing Centres
COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Update

During the recent outbreak of COVID-19 Coronavirus, we have been following UK government guidelines and working with the rolling advice from the public health authorities.

We have maintained a close oversight of the guidance issued by Public Health England and the NHS and have aligned our position with this.

We are living in unprecedented times. At Worcester & Stratford Hearing Centres we have come to the difficult decision to cancel our clinic for all face-to-face consultations from Tuesday 24th March until further notice.

We have to limit non-essential physical interactions in order to comply with government advice and most recent recommendations to prevent the spread of COVID-19 to be able to protect all of our customers and staff members.

Hearing and communication are essential in a time of emergency. In a time when people are practicing social distancing, we need to be able to communicate virtually via phone and other virtual platforms with loved ones.

Hearing plays a central role in many of these communications, so although our practice is not physically open for consultations at this time, we are here to offer help, advice, repair services and consumable such as batteries and wax filters.

This is a temporary measure for the greater good while we all get through this difficult time. We will be back to our normal opening times and providing our full services as soon as possible.

Thank you for your patience and support.

In line with these guidelines, we have increased our focus on excellent infection prevention and control in all aspects of our care.

We have maintained a close oversight of the guidance issued by Public Health England and the NHS and have aligned our position with this. We have included below a few important links to some of the key aspects of this guidance.

If you are attending our practice, here are some points to keep in mind:

If you have lived with or had close contact (within 2 meters for 15 minutes or more) with a confirmed case of COVID-19, you should contact NHS 111 for further advice, and not attend your appointment.

Preventing spread of infection:

There are general principles we can all follow to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, we will be doing the following:

  • Regular hand washing – with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • Covering our cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in a bin. See Catch it, Bin it, Kill it
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces in the work environment

2 years completed….. and looking forward to many more

It has been two years since the Worcester Hearing Centre first opened its doors in the Cornmarket in Worcester. In excess of 500 hundred people have visited the centre for a variety of reasons; from assistance with their hearing problems to getting custom made hearing protection, or wax removed from their ears.

The hearing centre prides itself on the fact that they offer the latest technology in hearing systems. There are instruments today that sit deeply in the ear canal that cannot be seen, as well as instruments that have a high level of technology for those people who have a demanding listening lifestyle. In addition to this there is technology now available that can help the tinnitus sufferer cope better this often debilitating condition. Victoria Dixon, senior audiologist at the centre, said “over the last two years people have consulted us over a wide range of hearing needs and we are really pleased that we can undoubtedly help them to hear much better, using the latest technology that we have available from some of the world’s leading manufacturers of hearing systems”. The hearing centre has had a variety of open days throughout this year, taking the opportunity to introduce new technology as soon as it’s announced, keeping the people of Worcester up to date with what is going on in the world of hearing assistance.

Not only does the centre focus on Hearing systems, it also has a hearing protection specialist, Tom Dixon, the centre manager, who specializes in noise protection of all types. He frequently tell is clients stories from his experience in the musical world and about hearing protection for musicians. In addition to this he is often asked to solve the never ending problem of ‘snoring’, whist Tom says, ‘stopping snoring is not in his area of expertise, he can make very good sleep plugs for the person who is kept awake by their partner snoring, thus ensuring the person most effected by someone snoring can get a good night’s sleep’.

Over the last two years, Victoria and Tom, have seen many people who have visited the centre for advice about all aspects of their hearing, and they pride themselves on being able to change people’s lives by helping them hear better. Loss of hearing often makes people insular and reticent to go out and mix with other, this in itself brings complications and often causes depression and loss of confidence. By solving the hearing problems, their clients can claim back their lives, mix with their friends again and be sure they can hear what’s being said, without fear of embarrassment because they can hear clearly and they don’t mix up words any more.

The Worcester Hearing Centre offers free hearing tests for anyone worried about how well they are hearing, as well as free assessments for those who need any type noise protection. From hearing assistance to help with tinnitus, protection from the snoring of a loved one to protection from the effects of loud music, they have ‘a solution for your ears’.
